Discover Sea Kayaking Courses

We plan to run Discover Sea Kayaking courses in Mullaghmore and Rosses Point in Sligo and on Lough Melvin in Leitrim from August onwards.

Our Discovery courses are a gradual and progressive path to go sea kayaking. Discovery 1 is the place to start if you want to see what it's all about. You can do just do Discovery 1 or you can add Discovery 2 and 3 for a comprehensive introduction to sea kayaking in which you'll learn to control your boat, about safety at sea, how weather and tides affect you, how to do rescues and how to manage in bumpier water.

Discovery 1

Killiney Dolphins

Escape from the hustle and bustle for a couple of hours - our Discovery 1 Sea Kayaking sessions give you a taste of the fun, adventure and coastal exploring that is sea kayaking. We introduce you to the best way of exploring Ireland's coastline. We’ll have some fun on the water, learn new skills and discover the wonderful marine environment around Sligo and Leitrim.

Sessions run from Rosses Point and Mullaghmore in Sligo and Lough Melvin in Leitrim and last for 3 hours.

Discovery 2

On Discovery 2, you'll learn how to control your kayak more efficiently and easily.

We'll get you paddling further and faster with as little effort as possible.

We'll help you to paddle the kayak in wind and how to enjoy the thrills of downwind paddling. You'll also be introduced to tides and weather while having a nice trip on the sea.

It's about enjoying your time on the water and growing your confidence.

Discovery 2 & 3 don't have to be done in sequence, so you can do 2 before 3 if the timing suits better.

You'll learn more about safety, including how to rescue other kayakers and how to be an effective part of a group.

You'll also be taught how to stop yourself capsizing and will be brought into more wavey conditions to practice your new skills.

Discovery 2 & 3 don't have to be done in sequence, so you can do 2 before 3 if the timing suits better.

The three sessions in the Discovery series covers the syllabus for the Irish Canoe Union Level 2 certificate.

Full Introductory Course

The full Introductory course is the three Discovery sessions. You can do all three on the same weekend if you like but unless you're reasonably fit, you're better off spreading the sessions.

What next?

If you'd like to continue paddling you should look at the Improver courses. These sessions will focus on specific skills to get you up to paddling with a club or group in the shortest possible time while enjoying a half day trip.

Instructors and students

All our courses are run by Irish or British Canoe Union qualified instructors and the lead instructor is never less than Level 3 and is usually Level 4. There are never more than 4 students per instructor/assistant if we go outside the harbour so you get great individual attention.

What we provide and what you need...

We provide kayak, paddle, wetsuit, buoyancy aid and waterproof jacket. You need to bring togs, towel, a drink, a fleece or thermal top, a warm hat and footwear you don't mind getting wet.

Booking conditions

  • You need to pay in advance.
  • If a session is cancelled due to weather, you can reschedule.
  • Changes or cancellations: you can change or cancel your booking anytime up until 48 hours before the class without a problem. Any cancellation within that time forfeits the fee.
